Conveying efficiency of Potatoes Chip Auger Conveyor

Jul 14, 2025

What factors affect the conveying efficiency of Potatoes Chip Auger Conveyor ?

The conveying efficiency of Potatoes Chip Auger Conveyor is affected by multiple factors such as equipment design, operating parameters, material characteristics and environmental conditions, and needs to be systematically optimized to balance production capacity and product quality:

1. Equipment structure design

Spiral blade parameters:

Diameter and pitch: The larger the diameter (such as from 150mm to 200mm), the higher the unit rotation conveying capacity by about 40%, but too large a diameter will increase the extrusion and breakage of potato chips; the pitch should be 0.8-1.2 times the diameter. Too large a pitch will easily cause the material to slip, while too small a pitch will increase the pushing resistance.

Blade shape: Variable pitch blades (sparse at the feed end and dense at the discharge end) can reduce material accumulation at the front end and improve conveying uniformity, especially suitable for crispy potato chips after frying.

Chute design:

Inner diameter clearance: The clearance between the blade and the inner wall of the trough should be ≤2mm. If the clearance is too large (such as >5mm), about 20% of the material will flow back, reducing efficiency.

Inclination control: Horizontal conveying has the highest efficiency. For every 10° increase in inclination, the actual conveying capacity decreases by 15%-20%. It is recommended that the inclination be ≤15° to avoid material sliding down.

2. Operation parameter control

RPM Matching:

There is a nonlinear relationship between rotation speed and efficiency. At low speed (<15rpm), the efficiency increases significantly with the rotation speed. However, when the rotation speed exceeds 25rpm, the centrifugal force causes the potato chips to slip, and the efficiency increase slows down or even decreases. The optimal rotation speed is usually 20-25rpm.

Fill Factor:

The feed rate needs to control the filling factor between 0.3-0.6 (i.e. the proportion of the cross-sectional area of the material in the trough). If it exceeds 0.7, it is easy to cause blockage, and if it is lower than 0.2, it will waste production capacity. It can be dynamically adjusted through the feed gate or frequency conversion feeder.

3. Material properties and environment

Physical properties:

The moisture content of fried potato chips is less than 3%, the surface is crispy and easy to break, and the mechanical stress needs to be reduced during transportation; the grease or powder on the surface of the potato chips after seasoning will increase the friction coefficient. It is recommended to coat the blade surface with Teflon (friction coefficient ≤ 0.05) to reduce adhesion.

Environmental conditions:

When the air humidity is greater than 70% RH, potato chips absorb moisture, become soft, and easily clump together, blocking the gaps between the leaves. The workshop dehumidification system must be used to maintain humidity ≤ 60%. Too high a temperature (> 35°C) will accelerate the melting of oil and increase the conveying resistance. It is recommended to control the ambient temperature at 20-25°C.

By optimizing the structural parameters (such as blade diameter 200mm, pitch 220mm) and operating parameters (rotation speed 22rpm, filling factor 0.5) through orthogonal experiments, the conveying efficiency can be increased to 1.5-2t/h, while the breakage rate can be controlled within 3%, meeting the needs of industrial production.
